Your Regiments of Renown Lists – and the June Listbuilding Challenge

Tina Turner singing at rugby league gamesPedantic little books about grammar.  Basically crunchy mashed potatoes.  Every now and then, something comes along that captures the zeitgeist more than you could have hoped, and the Regiments of Renown Listbuilding Challenge really got you guys fired up.  I was swamped with submissions for this one, so I drafted in some help from the rest of the Plastic Craic team to sift through the entries and put together a podium.

Giants were popular (as expected); I did think I’d see somebody go for the Big Waaagh home run, but that didn’t come, so I’ll throw that discussion over to our Discord this weekend and we can bash something together in the Destruction Dojo.  For today, let’s take a moment to enjoy a selection of the cool lists you guys cooked up.

Our winner this month has already won an RTT with this exact list, meaning we know it has some kind of competitive chops, so let’s smash into the podium.

Calvin writes: Ah, Flesh Eater Courts. Our favorite delusional cannibals, now with an entire entourage of other flesh eaters! Veremord’s Shamblers fit in well here, costing a miserly 180 points for effectively 22 models on an objective. A cheap screen that, you know, DOES SOMETHING is a big deal for FEC.

As TZ pointed out when sending in their list, you’re usually seeing FEC in the 10+ drop range since Galletian Veterans is such a big deal for Crypt Horrors and Crypt Flayers with their 1″ reach. As such, screens are king to not getting alpha’d, as well as making getting doubled T1 into T2 less devastating.

Additionally, sometimes you don’t even need to fight on an objective to win it, and if you’ve ever read my guides/reports on Bonesplitterz here on PlasticCraic you’ll know that sometimes charging is the WORST thing you can do. Having those 20 bodies helps immensely when you simply need to touch the objective to get those precious primary points. Meanwhile, your Ghoul Kings and Flayers can go rampaging–err, crusading across the battlefield causing havoc wherever they go.

Rule, Brettonia!

Second Place: Dom Stonebridge, Stormcast Eternals

Pat writes: I like this list for its simplicity. The biggest thing Norgrimm’s Rune Throng has going for it is the ability to castle up on an objective so you may as well take it in a Castling list and activate the 5 + ward as soon as possible. Set up on your home objective with the Longstrikes behind the dwarfs, activate the ward and start blazing away. There are nice little chunks of mortal damage coming from all over the place. I might have preferred a 6 man Annihilator unit for more punch, but two 3’s gives you more mortal wounds and won’t hurt you as badly if one of them does fail their charge.

Galletian Sharpshooters with Longstrikes is a solid choice. I had to look up a Redemption Brotherhood, it’s the fancy name for a Stormcast one drop so at least you’re confusing your opponent.

The Knight-Incantor has a reasonable chance of getting the comet off as well. If everything comes together, this list can do a bit of work and potentially make life miserable for the KO, which is always a bonus. Personally I like a 20-man blob of Ironbreakers for my castle walls in this type of list, but Norgrimm’s Rune Throng probably does a better job. Good effort finding a productive use for the Regiment.

Third Place: Nathaniel Sudek, Sons of Behemat

– Army Faction: Sons of Behemat

– Army Type: Stomper Tribe

– Grand Strategy: Make the Land Tremble!

– Triumph: Inspired

Peter Atkinson writes: SOB is a natural home for Big Grikk, since they support the big fellas in two ways at once, and putting them in your list gives you dual benefits. Firstly they give you that bit of hero sniping – still useful for taking out named characters under the current Handbook, and even just bludgeoning through some combat unit that you really don’t want to fight (Death Frenzied Plague Censer Bearers spring to mind) can get you out of a hole.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, you’ve got access to a pseudo screen. They are not an efficient screen by any means, but then they don’t necessarily need to be – in a lot of matchups you can really just steer into your main win condition of surviving on or near objectives for 3+ turns, and merely having a unit that costs less than a Mega and wastes a turn of your opponent’s output can get you that one crucial step closer to the finish line. Or putting it another way: they cost structurally the same as two Mancrushers, but cover more space, so they are the most effective screen you’ve got. And hey, you might still get a bit of juice out of them in shooting or overwatch too.

Shoutout to @ZombieHorde33 who put in a very similar entry, but the reason I’m putting Nathan on the podium is that I love the loadout on his General as well as the Mancrusher spam for this build. Nathan has grabbed the full Crouching Gargant, Hidden Stonehorn rig which is important, because it gives a solid foundation to a list that is ostentatiously fragile everywhere else.

Beyond that, there’s a whole bunch of specific synergies and complementary tech:

  • We’ve got a mini gunline of Mancrushers, all chucking two rocks each in Stompers to support the Dakka from the Kruleshots
  • The babies are capping as 10 models each, slip sliding around the board to die comically but in waves and drowning your opponent in targets
  • The big block of babies is a serious threat and great fun to stomp around with

All in all it’s a well-crafted list and a unique way to play the army. Moving beyond the standard Sons DPS test, this list is kitted out to threaten your opponent’s key pieces in multiple phases, but also set them a different challenge to deal with a whole bunch of fragile units pinballing around the board. It’s the ultimate “Joke’s on you” where most of your units will be massively overkilled by anything half decent, while the next one and the next one keeps capping the points.

Forget about the static Four Pillars lists, this is way more dynamic. It would very technical to play properly – positioning your babies to minimise pile ins while planning your waves of objective thievery – but I know that Nathan knows his Giants, and he’s just the lad to pull it off. Every part of this army complements the rest and it would be an intriguing challenge – as well as an absolute blast – to play with and against. Great job mate.

June Listbuilding Challenge: The Perfect Battle Regiment

I reckon we wargamers tend a little bit towards OCD, is that fair to say?  This is one that’s been tickling my brain for a while now, and I quite often write lists that accidentally come close, and find myself tempted to tie up the loose knot.

What am I on about?  I’m on about Battle Regiments!  What I want you to do for me this month is cook up an army list that fills out every slot in a Battle Reg; nothing more, nothing less.

Your Challenge for June

  • 2000 point Matched Play lists
  • The whole list must fit into a single Battle Regiment
  • The list must utilize every slot within that Battle Reg
  • So that includes (for example) 1 Artillery piece or 1 Behemoth
  • I will accept Rule of Cool entries as well as competitive lists

And that’s it!  Any faction, any Grand Alliance; Allies and universal options are all fine.  I just want you to completely fill out a Battle Regiment with every slot occupied; a one-drop army all tied up in a neat bow.

As a word of advice, bear in mind that conditional Battleline can mess with Battlefield Roles: so for example a Stonehorn Beastriders unit will fill the Behemoth slot if you don’t have a BCR General, or 1 of 5 Troops slots if you do. Just something to keep an eye on.

Big love to everyone who sent in a list this month – please don’t be discouraged if yours wasn’t published this time round, because there were some crackers that we had to leave out – and massive shoutout to TZ, Dom and Nathan who did make the Podium, especially TZ and his winning list. Well done mate.

As a reminder, the prize for winning is currently internet points, but you do also get the right to set a future monthly challenge if you wish. Reach out to me if you’re a past winner and want to take us up on this.

So bombard me with your Perfect Battle Regiments in the comments, on Twitter DMs, or via email at plasticcraicaos@outlook.com

I’m brewing up a couple of sweet ideas for this one myself, so I’m keen to see if you guys send in something that hits similar notes.  Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
