June 2024: A Month in Plastic

by Peter Atkinson

BAM! Well that’s June wrapped up, and we’re all saying our prayers and taking our vitamins as we limber up for 4th Ed. Dunno about you, but I’ve really missed writing lists, and I’m looking forward to firing that up again as much as actually playing the game.

We do publish regularly here on Plastic Craic – all AOS, all the time – so this is the first in a new monthly format where we’ll publish an index of the most recent month’s articles to help you catch you up on everything you’ve missed that would be of interest to you. Then we’ll look ahead to what’s coming up next month, and check in on what’s happening in the Craicheads community.

Ready? Let’s go.

Indexhammer: June 24

We published 12 articles in June, which in imperial weights and measures at least is a nice round number.

4th Edition

Pete kicked the month off with a review of Kragnos’s new rules, and Pat wrapped it up by reviewing the Khorne preview for some accidental symmetry.

Pete also reflected on our reactions to reveals as a community. This was the one that Vince made his Pick of the Week on WHW but repeatedly said was to be found on Goonhammer, by the way. Motherfucker!

Meanwhile Calvin crafted two big features on 4th Edition, showcasing some crucial rules interactions to be aware of and providing on On-Ramp into the system for 40K players which might hopefully help get a few of that crowd over the line to trying our game.

Tournament Coverage

Pat and Joel played in the teams even in Bendigo (on emphatically opposing teams), which Pat covered in this two-parter.

Hobby

Seanzor delivered this piece on how to make and use Sprue Goo. We also announced the Spearhead Hobby Challenge which will take place in July and August – so now’s the time to get involved. There’s prizes!

Community

In addition to the Spearhead Hobby Challenge, we also published your Unfinished Business lists, and asked you to cast your votes on the early 4th Edition meta which we’ll be analysing in the near future. Note that those last two links are locked to Patrons only.

Making the Horned Rat Proud

Stop press! We did publish a last-minute 13th article in June, where Pete wished farewell to Warscroll Builder and looked at the other options out there, including a user review of New Recruit (in three words: A bit fiddly).

Smashing into 4th Ed

The big focus for July here on Plastic Craic will be our rundowns of the new Indices. We’re certainly not planning on rushing out all 24 reviews on the day they drop – other people can do it first, and we’ll do it best. We’ve got a format planned for our analysis, and we’ll be looking to our readers to steer the direction: we’ll put up a series of polls on the Patreon site where you can have an input on which armies we cover, and in what order.

Brute Tier and above includes voting power so we’ll throw it over to you guys to influence our coverage. Can’t wait to get working on some interesting and competitive lists with you all in the Discord too. Calvin has already got the ball rolling in July with an analysis of the Manifestation Lores.

Craicheads

We’re rapt to welcome our new Patrons since the last update:

Thank you so much to everyone for getting involved.

We committed to giving our members good value by publishing an average of 2+ AOS articles every week on the main site, in addition to the Patron-only posts on that platform too. The Discord is members and writers only (No Dickheads Policy) so if you want to join us, you know what to do.

Plastic Craic Community Update

As mentioned above, the Spearhead Hobby Challenge will run through July and August. Still plenty of time to get involved – I’ll be doing Kruleboyz for mine.

Our PC Book Club is nearing the end of our first book – we won’t always do Black Library books, but we did this time, and we’ve all been reading Dark Harvest by Josh Reynolds..

We’re doing a book every second month in the Book Club – it gives people a chance to read other stuff in-between, and in the “off month” we’ll discuss the one we’ve just finished together, and nominate and vote for the next Book of the Month. Any newer Patrons who missed reading Dark Harvest in June are still welcome to jump into the Book Club channel on the Discord during July with your nominations for August’s reading material, and we’ll pick one together.

A bunch of us also set some goals for 2024 which we pinned in that channel – and any newer Patrons are welcome to join in with their Half-Year goals. Most of us have gone for a mix of hobby and general life goals, so you can get involved for the second half of 2024. It’s a very supportive group.

And finally (and most importantly), let’s have a round of applause for our friend Nic who has only gone and won Best Army at Worlds Singles!

Best army in the world has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Well done mate. I’ll be twisting his arm to do a showcase article here on the blog.

So that was June! Another big month. Wishing you all a safe and successful July – and thanks again for all your support, it’s what keeps us going.

If you’d like to help us continue our work, we’d love to have your support. All Patreon Tiers include Discord access, exclusive articles and regular contests. Our Tiers are priced to be within everyone’s reach, so please click here to join us today!
