Welcome to the first of our regular updates on the Spearhead Hobby Challenge which is running throughout July and August. Prizes include a Spearhead box of your choice for the winner: the challenge is open to all Patrons, and there’s plenty of time to get involved.
After the first fortnight of our Spearhead Hobby Challenge we have a great crew of participants, jumping in on a huge assortment of factions. Some people are still getting their minis in hand as Skaventide has just released this weekend, but we’ve already got a bustling, active crew of hobbyists planning, assembling and painting away. Here’s a recap of these first two weeks.
AussieWargamer – Gloomspite Gitz
AussieWargamer is showing everyone just how flexible the Trogg kit can be with a hobby saw and some creativity. Tim’s theme is an underground Troggoth wrestling promotion. This army is going to be wild, and we are here for it.

Xander – Cities of Sigmar
Xander has ripped right out of the gates with a compelling paint scheme, already starting to see a few finished models from the excellent CoS Spearhead. These are great new kits, and Xander is more than doing them justice.

Brighthoouse(GitzChris) – Kharadron Overlords
Launching into the new edition with KO, we’re looking to see what Brighthoouse does with these sky pirates, especially as they are getting GITTED OUT!

Clarkzium – Cities of Sigmar
A vegemite-themed Cities of Sigmar army? Oh yes! Clarkzium is modifying the box set slightly to have a full Spearhead-worth of painting ahead. A true Australian icon, and the spread isn’t bad either.

Dan (That Deer) – Skaven
By the time you read this Dan should be diving head first into a brand new Skaventide box set, but Dan started things out with a bit of work on his Endless Spells:

Patrick Neven – Lumineth Realmlords
Our very own Pat is coming in hot with some Aelf-flavoured goodness. Already busting out some painted models, looking slick.

Nate (Taco) – Lumineth Realmlords
Joining Pat in the search for a fair and balanced Aelf faction, Nate is also getting the forces of Aetherquartz together to show us all a thing or two.

Neil B (LemonTea) – Stormcast Eternals
Happy to see the golden heroes of the Mortal Realms getting a little bit of representation via Neil B. Nothing is more Warhammer than a magnificently-oversized two-hander, and these Vanquishers are going to look the business.

tropichammerz – Ironjawz
No official Spearhead? No problem! Tropichammerz has taken it on himself to built out an Ironjawz Spearhead while we wait for the official one from GW. Keen to see where this goes.

furythrow2 – Sons of Behemat
Announcing 3x Mancrushers as a Spearhead was a bit of a mic drop moment from GW. Mancrushers have never been hotter and Alex has three Gargants in a nice coat of white primer ready for big moves, literally.

PlasticCraic – Kruleboyz
Our very own fearless leader is coming in with some fully custom kitbashing and making something epic out of the Kruleboyz box. I’m sure we’ll see a few more cheeky conversions by the end of this project 😉

Pete writes: As you can see in that first picture, I’ve already converted and painted up a Killbow that I’ll be using in this Spearhead. I wanted to continue that theme with the force’s other centrepiece model: the Gnashtoof. The idea is to represent Bonesplitterz in the army, and showcase them in leadership roles. The Splitterz are in charge, they’re bigger and they’re badder, and the Kruleboyz do whatever the Savages tell ’em to.
I built that Killbow from spare bits which you can read about here, but at the heart of the model is the super-sized Savage Orruk. I’ve made these with Ogor torsos (specifically unused Beastriders) and either Brute or 3rd-party Nob heads (these ones came from Forfun Minis, which seems to be sadly defunct, but there are plenty of others out there). What I like about those naked torsos is that apart from getting some pseudo-Bonesplitterz in there, visually it gets plenty of bright green on show, as there should be in any Orruk army.

Looks like I’ll be eating candy for breakfast here and painting up Stig Babba (my Big Boss on Gnashtoof) first, then working back to the basic troops later. But I’ve got some ideas to jazz up the Gutrippaz too, once I’m finished with Stig Babba.
seanzor – Soulblight Gravelords
Seanzor has modified his “Spearhead”-equivalent based upon the contents of the Vengorian Court Christmas box + Belladama. Aim is to build towards a Dire Wolf heavy list into the new edition.

tavendale – Flesh Eater Courts
Going full custom with a printed FEC army, tavendale’s army is a good blend between undead monstrosity and knightly order. Sculpts have been hand-chosen to reflect both aspects of the army.

RussellCroweAoS – Sons of Behemat
Mr. Crowe has already dug deep into the hobby energy and started hacking up Gargants to create unique reposes for the trio in the Spearhead.

Boots – Gloomspite Gitz
Another Gitz fan, Boots is away from hobbying at the moment, but made sure to give us a snap of what is to come!

That’s a wrap for the first fortnight. Very excited to see such a big crew start this Challenge, and it’s not too late to jump onto the Patreon and submit your own entry to take part! We’ll be back soon with another update on everyone’s progress.
