Spearhead Hobby Challenge Update: Let This Crew Cook

Welcome to the second of our regular updates on the Spearhead Hobby Challenge which is running throughout July and August. Prizes include a Spearhead box of your choice for the winner: the challenge is open to all Patrons, and there’s still plenty of time to get involved.

As the second fortnight of the Hobby Challenge is wrapping up, we’re seeing some excellent hobby from the PC community. Some Craicheads are still converting and assembling models, while others have moved on to painting and even started completing models – basing and all! These last two weeks have seen a lot of cooking take place – you can check out the first update here, so without further ado, let’s let this crew cook. Enjoy!

AussieWargamer – Gloomspite Gitz

AussieWargamer has been working on his underground Troggoth wrestling promotion. Tim is getting those Troggs converted with a lot of character, and is now starting to slap paint around. We’ve also seen what will become of those Shootas in the box set with a few rowdy fans shouting insults at the wrestling Troggs. Ha!

Oooh wee these are looking mint

Xander – Cities of Sigmar

Xander just keeps making these Cities kits look amazing, and with some more finished models Xander keeps on snagging excellent progress on this project! Those colours juxtaposed with the snow bases are coming out so good.

Clarkzium – Cities of Sigmar

The Vegemite continues to be spread on thick here. Look at these fusiliers coming together brilliantly, again showcasing the quality of these new CoS kits with some absolutely crisp painting.

I said do you speak my language?

Dan (That Deer) – Skaven

Dan’s painting these last two weeks has been epic! Really starting to see this whole thing come together with the Skaventide goodies in hand, and a clear plan in place for painting. These new Skaven kits are absolutely stellar and Dan has done them great justice! Check out that hazard pattern pauldron and the weathered (and bloodied) blade.

Dan is a big fan of applying those Army Painter Scorched Tufts on his bases – they have a nice earthy feel to them

Patrick Neven – Lumineth Realmlords

The first of our updates from the PC writing team, Pat is continuing to work on his Lumineth and developing the paint scheme. Going with that classic gold, blue and red scheme, almost like Lumineth might actually be the good guys in this story? Keep smashing mate!

Tropichammerz – Ironjawz

Tropichammerz has been pushing along with the painting, getting some of those slick new Ardboyz painted up in an eye-catching black and flame scheme. This is going to be a very cool and striking army.

Check out those flames 🔥🔥🔥

PlasticCraic – Kruleboyz

Pete writes: I’ve rounded out the Dakka part of this army by adding the Boltboyz. My Kruleboyz will come in purple and green: a truly classic combo. It was good enough for the Green Goblin, it was good enough for Kang the Conqueror and I guess it’ll be good enough for Da Frogg Lickaz.

Stan Lee knew

My plan was to have an overall earthy look in the army with one bright pop of colour, being the iconic Scare Shields (which in the case of the Boltboyz are worn as either chest plates or ginormous belt buckles, I’m still not sure which):

What I’m finding is that although I love the coral colour itself (Wild Rider Red), the bright green skin tones (Orruk Flesh) are also pretty saturated – which means the models as a whole are not grimy enough for what I had in mind. As I move onto the Gutrippaz next, I’ll go really rusty on the shields and if I like that better, I’ll come back and rework these guys to match.

One small tip for new painters is to make the Boss in every unit very distinctive, so it’s easy to pull casualties in the heat of battle without accidentally lifting the guy with slightly better rules. In this case I’ve given him a shiny silver helmet where the others are earthy browns (and washed with Agrax to dull them down further). If it was a combat unit for example I might give the Boss a shiny golden axe instead, serving as both a handy visual aid and a subtle pop culture reference for middle aged nerds. Kick that gnome up the ass! Kick him harder!

seanzor – Soulblight Gravelords

I spent the last few weeks assembling and getting things planned out and pulled together for the project. Got the airbrush out and laid down all the base coats, so the next step from here is to start cranking out some more base coats and hopefully some finished models soon:

tavendale – Flesh Eater Courts

Tavendale’s custom FEC army is definitely coming along with some colour and vibrancy. They are looking very cool and definitely do a great job walking the line between horror and regal. Slick!

Shout out to Tavendale for his first attempt at blending on that green steed – Nailed It!

RussellCroweAoS – Sons of Behemat

These Gargants are looking so cool. Russ has pushed that old Gargant kit to the absolute max with these three very different and unique conversions. On top of that we’ve already seen some sliced and diced Megas coming in the pipeline too. Courageous work!

Aleguzzler by name…

Boots – Stormcast

Boots has stepped away from the Gitz and moved over to the new Stormcast instead, and wow there’s been a lot of progress! Blocked-in colours and a scheme starting to come together. These models are epic as well!

That’s a wrap for the second fortnight. Very excited to see the crew keep up with this Challenge, and it’s not too late to jump onto the Patreon and submit your own entry to take part! We’ll be back soon with another update on everyone’s progress.
