Welcome to the third of our regular updates on the Spearhead Hobby Challenge which is running throughout July and August. Prizes include a Spearhead box of your choice for the winner: the challenge is open to all Patrons, and there’s still nearly 3 weeks of hobby time left to jump in!
As the third fortnight of the Hobby Challenge is wrapping up, we’re seeing the real attrition come in (or super sneaky progress that people aren’t sharing). These last two weeks have snuck up on a fair few who are starting to head off to weekend tournaments (and having hobby time dedicated to finishing tournament lists), as well as others just having to fight to stay motivated on what is a 2nd or 3rd (or 50th) side project. But the crew keeps dropping quality stuff, so let’s catch some fresh drops.
If you want to catch up on the challenge so far, you can check out the first update here and the second update here. Let’s get into it.
Clarkzium – Cities of Sigmar
Letting them balls loose in every way possible. We got a lad chugging back the Mitey V like it’s water, and blowing holes in the opposition without a second thought. This kit is so good and with Clarkzium’s take on it, it just sings in glory.

AussieWargamer – Gloomspite Gitz
AussieWargamer has wrapped up this very characterful Rockgut Troggoth unit for the Gitz Spearhead. The blood is on the snow and the Troggs have been converted to be so dynamic, really showcasing the versatility Aussie has as a hobbyist along with the quality of these kits. Cannot wait to see how the rest of this underground wrestling promotion-themed force finishes up.

Xander – Cities of Sigmar
Xander has also been on some side quests getting Ogors ready for a tournament, but still cooking on the Cities in background. Here’s some WIP of the next batch of lads, obviously in need of some snowy accoutrement on the bases and some iconography, but still such a good-looking bunch.

Dan (That Deer) – Skaven
Dan’s painting these last two weeks has been epic! Dan has been absolutely frolicking through these Skaven and we’re really starting to see this whole thing come together. That vivid green warpstone glow is really popping now on those weapons as well as the bases.

There’s more than pictured as well! Dan is killing it
Tropichammerz – Ironjawz
After those slick-looking Ardboyz in the Black and Flame scheme, I’m trusting Tropic to keep pumping this project along with some absolutely throbbing quality. Last seen pumping up a Big Pig to add to the crew, I reckon it’ll be a good ‘un.

Hog? Cranked
PlasticCraic – Kruleboyz
Pete writes: Well the good news is: I’ve played some Spearhead games! And the even better news is: Spearhead is really good fun. This week I’ve been juggling painting my Kruleboyz Spearhead with finishing up my Ogors for a GT that’s round the corner, and trying to perfect “The Kangaroo” for the next time I hit the clubs, so painting progress has been limited to doing a purple blend on Stigg Babba. I’ll get there for sure, but my main update this week is that I got the chance to roll some dice with Rocky, and the game honestly is fantastic.

Rocky and I were in Wollongong on unrelated business, and the beauty of Spearhead is that it fits into your hand luggage. Would have been a bit weird if we didn’t, hey?

It was a little bit makeshift, using a mixture of old 3″ markers I happened to already have, and a couple of combat gauges on the board edge. We also printed and sleeved the cards thanks to TC Repo.

The gameboard fits nicely on the dining table in our Airbnb:

Probably the biggest takeaway was how elegant the battle tactics cards are. In case you don’t know, you draw three cards every turn, and each has a battle tactic and an ability on there. So if you draw a dud that can’t achieve, you can use the other option instead, but you can use only one or the other on each card. If you score the BT you get one extra VP (scoring is otherwise 1-2-More), and the abilities are a mixture of classic command abilities that you couldn’t otherwise use in this game (like Redeploy), and all-new abilities cooked up just for Spearhead.

We played 3 rounds and had a blast. I think Spearhead could be pretty big for our local group: not just for onboarding new players, but bringing back the dads who’ve given up on the main game, which just moves too fast to keep up with when you’ve got kids and a job. This should be ideal for a few of those people in our group.
seanzor – Soulblight Gravelords
I’ve been doing my Contrast paint basecoat batching, and also throwing a few extra lower-level shades in crevices, armpits, etc. So when I start hitting up the layers, I’ll have everything pre-shaded and I just need the top half of the midtones added in along with the highlights. I reckon this is what I’d consider the “Shit Phase” of doing an army, where you toil for little visible payoff, but every step after these basecoats will just be money in the bank. This is just me putting in 75% of the work before anything really comes to fruition, but I’ve got trust in the process.

Got that dog in me.
Farmhammer – Flesh Eater Courts
Farmhammer jumped in with a fresh new FEC Spearhead, hopefully we’ll see some solid progress on the box over the next few weeks.

RussellCroweAoS – Sons of Behemat
Russ is on a bit of a sidequest with the Gargants, working alongside the rest of his 2k list which features yet more wild conversions. Hopefully we’ll see some paint on the littles soon so we can see a finished Spearhead from Mr. Crowe in the next few weeks.

Just swanging that thang.
Boots – Stormcast
Boots is still chugging along on the basecoats, but with the basing done we’re getting a pretty good picture of where these Stormcast are going to end up. They look great, so regal and can’t wait to see where they go next.

These new Core Set SCE have a lot of flaming weapons and fire-trails for a painter to work with.
Casteel – Kruleboyz
Our latest Patron Casteel did this Spearhead / Vanguard earlier in the year, so this isn’t officially part of the Challenge, but we wanted to share these pics because they look great and deserve a showcae. How cool do these look??

How great are the shields?? I love them!
That’s a wrap for the third fortnight. Very excited to see the crew keep up with this Challenge, and it’s not too late to jump onto the Patreon and submit your own entry to take part! We’ll be back soon with another update on everyone’s progress, as we collectively head down the finishing straight.
