Introducing Our First Annual Painting Contest: The Sticky Brush 2025

by Seanzor

We all had a real buzz going after our Spearhead Hobby Challenge, so thanks again to all the Craicheads who took part – and we’ve now got another challenge to look forward to! Today we’re launching The Sticky Brush, our first annual Single Model painting competition. This is about really pushing your own painting, with some special twists to make it accessible. The long and short of it is:

You’ve got until 31 January 2025 to paint up one model.

The contest is open to all Patrons, and it just started right now!

No units, no dioramas, hell I don’t even know if we want Katakros involved1. Now this model should be something you can really fall in love with, take to the park, watch a movie together, wine, dine and 69. It’s a chance to express yourself and grow your hobby skills.

We have a range of hobby contests for our Patrons across the year, and this one is about really pushing that one model as far as you can go.

How It Works

So with Golden Daemon, any old wanker can just show up with some cool painted model and they’ll hand them out a statue and a sword. Not here with the The Sticky Brush. To embrace this challenge you will need two pictures:

  • The unpainted model2 you’re going to work on until the end of January; and
  • A recently painted model of yours, to benchmark where you’re starting from.

And along with those pictures needs to be your mission statement for the challenge. For example:

  • “I want to learn how to do Object Source Lighting”
  • “I’m aiming to improve my TMM”
  • “I want to explore painting minis with oils”

Really it can be anything you want to achieve, upskill or improve in your hobby arsenal, and the model you choose for the challenge can be any single model you want to paint. It can be Citadel, a 3D print, a bust, large scale, small scale, converted, kitbashed, or bubblegum and toothpicks. If you’re energized to paint it to your own highest standard and beyond, and create something at the end that you’d be proud to share with the community, go for it.

Judging Criteria

This challenge will be judged primarily on your ability to reach your own goals, with weighting given to the difficulty of what you’re setting out to achieve. And of course a simple mission statement completed is better than a difficult one abandoned.

We’ll also consider the overall improvement from the benchmark model picture you provided. And last but not least is the participation aspect: keeping the PC Community up to date with how you’re progressing in our dedicated Discord channel, sharing your own tips and tricks, giving feedback to your fellow Craicheads and sharing WIP photos will all get extra kudos here.

This competition is open to all paid Patrons, so let’s have some fun and level up together!

Prizes

This one is all about the glory, and as such we’ll be awarding a really nice trophy to the winner this time around3. We’ll also be throwing in some hand-selected hobby materials to accompany it, and for the runner-up we’ll be offering one of our trademark NSFW4 Mystery Box prizes5.

So what the hell are you waiting for? It’s time to start splattering paint around frantically!

  1. Oh, go on then. ↩︎
  2. It can be assembled and primed, or still on sprue. Either is good. ↩︎
  3. In our last painting competition, Josh Clark won a SBGL Spearhead, in case you were wondering. ↩︎
  4. Seriously, last time someone did an unboxing video on one, they deleted it immediately rather than posting it onto socials. ↩︎
  5. Is it an actual Sticky Brush? You want to know, you got to go. ↩︎
