Sooooooooooo what’s happened since our last monthly update? How about Plastic Craic writer Joel McGrath winning Cancon, did we mention that yet? OK then, better reset the clock.

I won’t labour the point any more1 but geez it’s a big win, and good on him for doing it with Giants. A victory that will echo around the world.

AOS is an absolute whirlwind right now. Since the last update we’ve had a new Destro Battletome, a mini FAQ and the Soulblight preview, starring a banging new Zombie Dragon:

And the breaking news is that GW have reacted to the lacklustre vibe around the incoming Gitmob by dropping their points already. We’ll share our thoughts and some lists in the near future but in the meantime – never let ’em tell ya that moaning is a waste of time. If moaning didn’t work, we’d still be playing a game with no points where instead of measuring model to model, you measured speartip to ass. Feedback works, people, and declining to buy the tiny handful of minis that makes up that “Army” box is the most impactful feedback of all.
It does though
The top Warcom article I’d recommend this month is a retrospective on Gitmob through the ages. I love it when GW honours their own heritage, and it had not escaped my attention that Droggz is carrying a bit of extra timber in tribute to our boy Grom the Paunch:

Anyway. Welcome to our monthly catch-up on what’s been going on in the Craichouse, both published here on the blog and in the Craichead community, plus a look ahead to what’s coming up.
Let’s get into it.
Indexhammer: January ’25
First up, thanks to our friend and Patron Darren Watson for suggesting this article on Friendly Unit tech. The premise is that Regiments of Renown can often synergise directly with your army in AOS4, so we’re building a resource that captures those possibilities:
If you’ve got any suggestions to add, give me a nudge and we’ll add them in (with credit). In a similar vein, Pat went to town on the super-special Keyword synergy open to the iconic Daemon Prince in all Chaos God armies:
As for tournament coverage, we had Pat’s build-up to Cancon and of course Joel’s dissection of his own 5-0 winning effort:
When the Gitmob warscrolls were leaked by Rob, I was very down on the prospects for a full-on Mad Max army, but more hopeful about the prospects for a couple of role-players in a broader Gloomspite army. We’ve seen some points now so I’ll follow up on that in the near future, but I definitely think that initial view holds water so far:
And winding the clock back a bit, Zak looked into the Order outcomes from the December Battlescroll:

We’ve kicked off the Plastic Craic Global Campaign! Check out the full update for Round 1 right here:
This is open to all Patrons and we’ll be doing it again, so if you want to join in next time around, then you’re welcome to jump on board.
We’ve also started reading Godeater’s Son in the Plastic Craic Book Club. It’s been a while since we did a Black Library book and I’m loving this one so far – and I’m rapt to see a mention for my favourite little corner of AOS lore, the Agloraxi Empire.

We’ll be discussing it together at the end of the month in the Discord.
Finally we’re launching a Footy Tipping Comp for both AFL and NRL this year. It’s free and easy to enter, and there’ll be a small prize for each, so if you’re wondering what the hell that even is, then check out the details over here:

On the Patreon site, we ran a series on BCR list tech. I’m particularly interested in lists that are split between BCR and Gutbusters, because I enjoy and appreciate both sides of the army, plus they’re a bit less one-note to play. But you can’t deny the power of Stonehorn spam right now, and in the Destro chat we also had a really robust discussion about Stonehorn Beastriders (for lower drops) vs Huskard on Stonehorn (for Prayer spam).
Elsewhere this month we updated the Campaign rules (I’m actively GMing this one, as it’s our first time running it,) and we flagged up a neat combo from the new Orruk Warclans book.
So What’s Next?
Coming up in February we have:
- The Second Round write-up for our Global Campaign is almost ready to go, while the Third Round is underway right now and will be covered next.
- We asked our Patrons for their favourite Field Sergeants, and Pat has picked out the best from your suggestions. Update: that article beat this one to press, so check it out. Like all the great Pat episodes, it’s abrasive, so you have been warned.
- We’ve got a lot of friends in Adelaide, and they can all look forward to being ripped to shreds in our Southern Smash GT list review. Pat personally requested to view Josh Clark’s list, so brace for impact.
- I’ve been asked to judge the best tracksuit at Tracksuit GT over in the UK. There will be photos!
- We’ve got an overview of Gloomspite tech and combos to watch out for. There’s a whole battletome-industrial complex around paraphrasing new books and spitting them back out, and we won’t be adding our own voices to that cacophony, but rather looking to add insights and value.
We also have a couple of articles on Giants in the pipeline, both hobby and gaming sides, but I’m getting smashed by the Campaign stuff right now2, so that’s been delayed slightly and we might have to circle back round to those in March. Similarly an article on why you don’t need to be scared of narrative gaming, and the next round of our classic fantasy artwork contest – they’re all coming, I promise. Just not in Feb.
