Spearhead Hobby Challenge: The Final Results Are In!

by Seanzor and Pete

Well folks – made it! The Craicheads have poured their hearts into this competition, and we’ve got a bunch of fantastic completed projects (plus a couple still partway through their journey) to show for it. This was a major undertaking to kick off 4th Ed – bigger than most of the hobby contests we would usually run – so we did make a gentleman’s pact to extend it by one month to the end of September.

One of the greatest aspects of this whole challenge was the camaraderie in our community: sharing progress shots, hobby tips, general advice and words of encouragement.

As a reminder, the prizes are:

  • First Place: A brand-new Spearhead of your choice, sent anywhere in the world!
  • Second Place: Mystery Box. Non-Warhammer related, choose this at your peril or die wondering.
  • Third Place: A selection of hobby supplies and basing materials.

Our runner up can choose between the Mystery Box or the hobby supplies, and the person who finishes third gets the other one. Fair warning, the last person who chose the Mystery Box found that it was not quite what they were expecting – but that’s the whole point of a Mystery Box, right?

¿ What’s in the box ?

Our overall winner would be someone who embodied all aspects of this challenge (hobby, painting and engagement) – and we are so excited to announce the winner of it all is **drumroll**

First Place: Clarkzium, Cities of Sigmar

Winner winner, chicken dinner! The King of Vegemite himself. Truly putting this Aussie staple front and centre across his entire force, with lots of freehand iconography, a striking paintjob and stepping up as a truly integral part of the community during the entire challenge.

Congrats mate, time to start a whole new Spearhead!

Second Place: Tropichammerz, Ironjawz

Our runner-up is this epic Ironjawz force from Tropichammerz – another stalwart of the crew. That Black and Flames scheme truly won us over – these are great, legendary work by the BSD from FNQ!

Third Place: Dan (That Deer), Skaven

Just epic, watching this whole project come together has been one of our favourite Skaventide paint jobs we’ve ever seen. Colourful yet dingy all at the same time, there are loads of details to feast your eyes upon. Great job in all aspects of the challenge Dan, you mad lad!

And we’re not done yet! With the Podium secured, let’s celebrate the great work that was achieved by everyone else who completed this challenge. There’s some really nice stuff here.

Xander, Cities of Sigmar

Brilliant effort from Xander, the colour scheme is just so enjoyable to look at and the pictures do them great justice with that clean backdrop. Such a good Spearhead from start to finish and just so easy on the eyes.

Tavendale, FEC

I’ve loved the creativity of this along the journey: a great blend between the FEC and Bretonian aesthetics, with a nice old school vibe in the green base trims and flocking. It’s an awesome force and hopefully we’ll see this keep expanding into a full army!

Boots, Stormcast

How good?! Great scheme that just gets reinforced the more you look at it. The blue + vibrant fire starts off cool enough, but as you explore and see the stars in the capes, you just find more things to get lost in. Then you switch on the UV light and wow, it’s really got layers of coolness all baked in. Rad!

That cape, those glowing eyes…the more you look at it, the better it gets

Furythrow2, Sons of Behemat

Classically one of the most versatile kits is showcased with this killer Spearhead from furythrow2. Nice classic aesthetic with the green bases, vibrant red colours and of course, a cameo appearance from a very unlucky Johan. Strong work, well done.

Plastic Craic, Kruleboyz

Our fearless leader himself coming through with his cheeky conversions and extra little special effects for this Orruk crew. The UV light and poisonous resin came to play here with a fun twist on the Kruleboy aesthetic, something that looks like it may catch on amongst the Craicheads.

Well those Weapons aren’t gonna Venom-Encrust themselves

Finally, we did have a couple of entrants who started out on the Challenge but weren’t able to complete it on schedule. As you’ll see, these are major undertakings from top artists, and the finished results will be something pretty special.

Aussie Wargamer, Gloomspite Gitz

Aussie didn’t finish up this Spearhead, but we wanted to share the latest progress shots at the buzzer. Such a cool project and these wrasslin’ Gitz are going to be a sensation when they’re finished up. So cool! Great work on what you did complete.

RussellCroweAOS

Gosh, Nic really went deep on the conversions for these lads. Such a massive departure from the stock kits and executed so well. This was the last point of completion for the littles in Nic’s latest army, as he had to focus down on all the bigs to get them done for Sydney GT. This is a really special army, and we can’t wait to see all of it finished up. Great work.

That wraps things up for this challenge. Thanks to everyone that built or painted a single model along the way. We’ll jump on another challenge soon enough, but we’ll likely make the next one a bit more bite-size!

Congrats again to our major winner Clarkzium, second prize winner Tropichammerz “The Oracle” and third prize winner Dan (That Deer)! We’ll be in contact to work out prizes with you all and we hope you’ve all had a great time taking part.
