Southern Smash GT: A Journey Through Whine Country

All lists shitcanned reviewed by Peter Atkinson (PA), Pat Nevan (PN) and Zak Rockman (ZR)

PN: The South Australian boys have stepped up their game and are moving to host two GTs a year, with Southern Smash kicking off on February 15th and joining the venerable South Australian GT. Good for them, although I can only wish South Australians were as good at naming events as they were at hiding the dismembered body parts of their victims. On the bright side, at least their tournament names are not as bad as their beer or tapwater.

For anyone unfamiliar with Australian interstate trash talk: terrible beer, undrinkable water and an unusual number of godawful crimes are the three classics when you bag out South Australia. In truth it’s a great place to visit with all the beaches, mountains, wildlife and crap you find in Tourism Australia adverts, plus the added appeal of some spectacular Wine Country for the shameless bourgeoisie to day-drink in. Adelaide itself is a well-planned gem of a city with a vibrant arts scene and thriving street culture. It’s just a shame that most of the people who live there are mouth-breathing deadshits, or the sort of affected would-be English Toffs who insist on informing you that Adelaide is the only Australian settlement founded without convict labor.

You’ve well and truly made up for it by now, Percival

Still, our good friends over in South Oz have requested a list review for Southern Smash and we were happy to oblige. South Australian tournaments are always a blast and a few of us are hoping to get over to SAGT later this year. Instead of the traditional “Best and Coolest” PC format for list reviews, Peter Atkinson, Zak Rockman and myself decided to divvy up the player list and bang out a few lines about each of the contenders. We figure we are less likely to be brutally murdered by including every one of these potential psychopaths in the article.

Anyways, enjoy the event, hope you guys have a great time.

The Lists

PA: There’s a little game you can play any time you meet someone from Adelaide. You start the timer, and if it takes less than 5 minutes until they start carrying on about Melbourne stealing their F1 Grand Prix, you win1. With that spirit of wounded belligerence in mind, we look forward to being shirt-fronted by whichever of you outperforms our expectations, the crow feathers flying from your mouths in spluttering outrage.

The truth is though that Adelaide AOS has a very proud history of their top players travelling interstate and scooping big event wins2, and there are some bloody good players here. So as well as rattling through each list at the event, we’ve cobbled together a collective Podium prediction, and you can catch that at the end.

Now let’s get into it.

PA: Let’s open up by mentioning that a member of the Plastic Craic writing team, Joel McGrath, just won Cancon with his Sons of Behemat. I just thought it deserved another mention. Adam has made the incorrect unusual decision to run Extra-calloused Feet without a Warstomper, and I do feel like he’ll live to regreat that somewhat, but the tooled-up Beast-smasher will make a great Prized Beast. I hope you get some cool stories out of old Fish Breath too.

PN: I guess somebody didn’t get the memo about trying to grow the South Australian AOS scene and brought his KO anyway. In fairness to my dear friend Krohn it looks like he has gone as close to a fun and interesting KO list as the unresolved childhood trauma that obliges him to run KO and Tzeentch all the time will allow him to. I honestly don’t mind this. Brokk, a Frigate and 2 x 6 Balloon Boys can give a devastating melee punch in our screenless game while the Ironclad and Thunderers will do enough to ensure that no one ever enjoys playing into KO. Won’t be surprised to see this one win.

PN: Frank is one of my disciples when it comes to all things Khorne. The mortal section of the list is good. Lots of heroes, lots of fun and enough Skullreapers to blend anything. The Daemon section is cool if you insist on running Daemons. The real issue here is running Firebrand as a command trait instead of Favored of Khorne and starting with a bloodtithe. How many times have I told you to start with a bloodtithe? At three drops you are good as guaranteed to get rolled up in one turn without a Murderlust to save you. What the hell Frank? If Jesus’s disciples listened as well as you, he would have betrayed himself to the Romans. Prove me wrong I guess.

ZR: Its a pretty inoffensive OBR list with got a little bit of everything, so I can’t complain too much about specific units being overpowered. Katakros is still an absolute prick to deal with – combined with Immortis Guard and the seasonal rule Bodyguard, it’s gonna end with you trying to make love to a mulcher. There is a Mortek Crawler in the list, so clearly Avi is one for the pokies, wanting to gamble on the Crawler doing anywhere between 50 and 0 damage per game.

I love to see a Skaven player leaning into the cooler Moulder side of the rats rather than the math nerds that run 18 Ratling fucks or the dreaded Plague Censer Bearers of third edition.

PA: Who said you can’t run a Seraphon Monster Mash? The answer, of course, is “Everyone who wants to win a few games”, but Gracie is going with Rule of Cool here today. It’s a shame there’s no room for the mighty Stegadon in Gracie’s portfolio of beasts but this army will undoubtedly look sick on the table. Even the Manifestation lore is another monster, and I’d be shocked if that Krondspine isn’t some really sweet counts-as model to round off the whole package.

Yet here we are, having to wear a fake grin through their extended hero phases as they fumble the dice, their hands trembling with the nervous and sweaty excitement of a virgin seeing his first bra. Those Hunters of Huanchi units are both getting the classic Order Discount too. After Gracie’s refreshing list, I had almost forgotten about why I can’t stand Seraphon – thank you Jacob for the timely reminder.

PN: Take a good look at this list Krohn. This is how you run a non-competitive list to encourage the growth of hobby. There are enough toys here to give new players the satisfaction of playing against the current Skaven meta but Josh has cunningly tanked the army. Ratling Guns without Clanrats, a quarter of his points wasted on a useless Regiment of Renown. There is a real artistry to the flaws in this list and I hope the new guys enjoy kicking the crap out of it.

PA: Be’lakor and Chosen…. I play against Slaves way too often to get excited about playing against this. There is some original thought here though in having the Chaos Knights and a Chaos Lord on Karkadrak, a really sweet mini that is getting some much-deserved table time here. One concern for the list is the fact that he has gone for all gas and no tactic scoring units, which might put a ceiling on how far this list can go.

PN: Great to see Luke back on the AOS scene. He has always been one of the best things about South Australian AOS. Similar to the realization that you don’t have to keep paying your bills when the doctors give you three months to live. This list avoids nearly everything people hate about the LRL and should be a blast to play against. That said, it still has the capacity to hit very hard and I won’t be surprised to see him win a couple.

ZR: FEC is pretty gross, dominating games with its high octane recursion of both units and models5. On the right missions this list can just sit in the middle of the board and not die, or if you do kill it, it pops up on another side of the board. Matthew has gone for the less optimal pick of taking a large amount of Crypt Flayers for some below-average shooting.

PA: A second Sons of Behemat list, and this feels like a good time to ask what is it with Adelaide and Kraken-eaters? When people in other countries say that Australia has a weird meta, I think it’s really Adelaide that they’re talking about. That Gatebreaker will love Prized Beast and the Warstomper is fair-set to wreak havoc with all those extra damage, extra rend stamp attacks.

Avalenor has some solid Tech to further reduce rend and can stack attacks on friendly units. It’s pretty punchy and pretty tanky and I always appreciate seeing an LRL list without Teclis. In fact I would almost say that I am a little bit in love with this list… but fuck Sentinels.

PA: I have a lot of time for Nicholas since we played about a year ago and had a good, long chat after our game finished quickly (polite way of saying I smashed him). The payoff for having the balls to leave Bela’Kunt at home is that you get to give each unit of Karens their own special abilities. That smorgasbord of buffs are the most basic shit imaginable (boosts to core stats like rend, attacks and movement) but fair play to Nicholas for giving that sensational Abraxia mini some airtime and trying something different. Well different-ish, the cunt’s still spamming Karens.

The Leviadon is another good recipient of Prized Beast and those Sharks are nasty on the charge. PA: Ramming Chosen up your opponent’s rectum at maximum velocity is either a bold maneuver of swashbuckling aggression, or a play pattern that’s getting pretty bloody old, depending which side of the table you’re standing on. This is a generic Slaves to the Meta list and I refuse to spend more time reviewing this army than Jared did writing a name for it. It’ll go well though.

I’d call this a meme list that’s quite good.

PA: It’s hard to muster a lot of excitement for another 20 Sentinels plus Teclis, who’ve both seen a lot of table hours since their release. To its credit, this army does have a big spread of models (8 different warscrolls across 8 different units), including a range of height profile between the troops, cavalry and centrepiece, so it will look like a proper classic army on the table – as well as being effective across all phases.

There’s a lot of lizards at this event and I believe this will be competing with Jacob Loch’s Kroak build for the limitless prestige of Best Seraphon Player in Adelaide. Sorceress is the standard pick and the Fleet-master for Field Sergeant is nice to provide 11″ moving Executioners. Troy has taken 3 reinforced units of random foot slogging Aelfs: basically a shitter version of Hammerers, some average shooting that bounces into a 3+ save and a unit getting up to like 81 attacks which is kind of hilarious. Oh and Zenestra is hanging around – with no other humans in the list its feels like a bit of an odd choice, but the Cities prayers are not half bad so why not?

It’s tough and hard hitting but includes a few interesting units from outside the Stormcast meta. Iridan and Tornus will look great on the table while still being decently competitive. PA: Yanni, a word of advice from a fellow asshole: nobody thanks you for running a shit version of a meta list. I’ve ran toned-down Kunnin Rukk lists in the past and people will still piss and moan when you beat them. No Longstrikes is cute, but all anyone can see when they look at this list is Karazai and some Praetors. I’m sure you’ll go well but if you want pats on the back, you’re gonna have to ski a little further off-piste than this.

The Wrap

PA: We’ve picked one person each to do well, and there are three of us, so we’ve ended up with a cobbled-together Podium prediction. Hopefully it goes better than Adelaide’s little trip to Queensland.

In no particular order…

  • Alex Krohn (PN)
  • Jared Hagard (PA)
  • Will Walters (ZR)

And just for fun, Luke Doman has the Coolest List at the event. Cow Aelves are sweet and Luke’s a great painter, so this army will look fantastic on the table for sure. We look forward to pictures of the army, if only for the novelty of seeing photos from your fine state in a context other than a true crime documentary.

Have a great weekend fellas. Looking forward to catching up with you all soon.

  1. I’m encouraged to see armies of 4 megas coming into the mix again. I just got a good deal on an assembled, basically painted, and magnetized 4 mega lot including Brodd (who will get a big KO balloon deep diver helmet to run with Crabnos, big tentacle Gatebreaker, and 3 sea creature mancrushers), and my giant Chaos Kdaai Destroyer mega can be either Daemon-Brodd or Daemon Gatey, plus the other 3 have Imperial Knight masks and pauldrons which are now black Chaos armor. So I’m ready for any build! None of which will include the Kraken-Eater. If he could stuff Varanguard into his net, I’d run him. Just gonna do 4 Gatebreakers to start though, keep it easy for myself. For my League, I have pledged to only do Pulverizing Strikes in combat for the whole 5 games. I’ll report how many MW they do in a later post that is completely unrelated to this topic.

Also glad someone else is trying the Swords of Chaos. Mine did terribly, losing to KO (badly and quickly), and also to Khorne (by a Murderlusting unit of Reavers bottom of turn 5, he won by 1 point).

Just bought a KO army, mainly to sell, because I hate them because I’ve never beaten them EVER, but looking at Brokk’s moustache guns…..I find myself aether-gold-curious. They’re up on eBay anyways.
